If we could give up sagehood and cast aside wisdom, the people would benefit a hundredfold. If we could give up benevolence and cast aside righteousness, the people would return to being devoted to family and kind to one another. If we could give up clever schemes and cast aside the pursuit of profit, there would be no more thieves or robbers.

These three approaches to government were considered refinements of older ways, but they fell short, and the names were used to mask their inadequacy. Better to hold to simple outlooks and plain, honest conduct, to curb selfishness and reduce desires.
